My Role
Lead Graphic Designer, Storyboard Artist, and Director
I was brought onto the project as the primary designer to help course-correct after the initial design direction. Following this reset, I was appointed Lead Designer, responsible for redefining the visual approach and guiding the project through completion.
I led the visual direction from concept through final delivery, developing the animation storyboard, establishing the design system, and directing motion execution to ensure alignment with Microsoft and Azure brand standards while meeting the project’s strategic goals.
Challenge
The goal was to create a 120-second public-facing sizzle video announcing SQL Server 2025 for the Azure team. The video needed to:
Generate excitement around the product launch
Appeal to developers and technical decision-makers
Offer a high-level but engaging “peek under the hood” of SQL Server 2025
Clearly communicate value without becoming overly technical
All of this had to be designed and produced within an extremely tight three-week timeline, after which the project would be handed off for final delivery and distribution.
Process
Assessment & Direction Reset
The first step was identifying what was not working in the initial approach. I evaluated early concepts and worked with stakeholders to determine whether the story should be communicated through literal style frames or a more abstract visual language. This clarity allowed us to reset expectations and move forward with confidence.
Storyboard & Style Frame Development
Created updated storyboards and style frames to clearly communicate pacing, visual hierarchy, and narrative intent. These frames served as a literal reference point for the team and stakeholders, ensuring alignment before motion production began.
Team Organization & Script Breakdown
After establishing design direction and completing initial sketches, I organized the team by splitting the script into defined sections. Each section was assigned to supporting designers and motion artists, allowing parallel production while maintaining consistency.
Art Direction & Motion Collaboration
Directed designers and motion artists throughout execution, providing feedback and refinements to ensure the animation supported the core story and met client expectations.
Client Alignment & Handoff
Maintained regular alignment with stakeholders to ensure customer satisfaction and that the primary goals of the project were achieved before handing off assets and documentation for final delivery.

Outcome
The project delivered a high-quality, on-brand 120-second SQL Server 2025 launch animation on time and within scope. The video successfully positioned SQL Server 2025 as a forward-looking, developer-focused solution while showcasing Azure’s technical depth in an engaging, accessible way.
